Securing your first job after graduation: First impressions count

Making your first steps into the creative industry can be very daunting. There is plenty of competition and so much information to draw from it’d very easy to get overwhelmed, follow this article some quick tips that will put you top of the list and a clear choice for employers.

Do you know we have around 80 people a year who get in touch asking to work for us 80! That means we have 8 people wanting every job we have!

1. E-mail address

A nice and easy one to start. Make sure that you have a professional looking e-mail address. gavinlutontown3443@gmail.com isn’t going to give the professional look that you need to be going for.

2. Presentation

First impressions really do count. Now we aren’t looking for you to wear a suit in a creative environment. Although, you have the license to wear what you want… doesn’t mean you should. Still be smart/casual as that will allow you to stand out from your competition.

3. What have you done

Now is the time to push out, you need to have had experience. We aren’t expecting experience, without being given the opportunity. but to know what you are talking about, will instantly put you to the top of the list. Of course, if you know about equipment and how to get a job done that is even more impressive!

4. Persistence (rather than annoyance)

We are all very busy and most of the time it is nothing personal! However, we do genuinely want the very best talent out there. If that is you then a simple ‘no reply’ shouldn’t stop you. Don’t e-mail every day but ensure that you keep it up until someone does reply. Maybe send one every few days until someone does, that always seems to do the trick with us.

5. Common sense

Always use your common sense. If it doesn’t feel right then it probably isn’t. We think that is the simplest ‘soft skills€’ that you can really work hard on.

6. Genuine passion

We are so lucky to work in the creative field as we do. People would literally give their right arm to do that, so show that passion at all times. We do a lot of the work in the States and you will not get anyone who shows their passion more. So take a leaf out of their book and get emotional and show us that.

7. Planning

Linking into our first blog/vlog of the year, you need to have a good plan as to why you are doing what you are doing. You need to know in 5 years time where you want to get to, as it will make everything else fall into place. So then first few steps are integral to that as you build your career, or continue to build your career.

8. Generosity

Finally always be generous whatever happens, give your time, your opinion, your love to all the people around you. Respect the job and the job will respect you. You could then be looking at the class of Clearhead 2019!
